Sweet Goodness

Sweet Goodness is the fourth cookbook i’ve shot with powerhouse sisters Patricia Green & Carolyn Hemming.  I love working with these girls - they always bring such a fun energy into the studio.

This time around the focus is on gluten-free baking recipes using ingredients such as millet, coconut, sorghum, oats, quinoa and chia seeds to name a few.

Here are some of my favourite shots and recipes from the shoot.

Buffalo Girl Cooks Bison

Buffalo Girl Cooks Bison is our second collaboration with the award-winning writer Jennifer Bain. We first teamed up with her to shoot the Toronto Star Cookbook a couple years ago. For her latest book, we turn our attention to,"North America's original red meat." Here's an interesting little tidbit about bison. "An undomesticated species, Bison are ethically raised and primarily grass fed. The result is a meat higher in protein and lower in fat than beef. It's also very high in iron and omega-3 fatty acids." This book features more than 100 bison recipes. Here are a few of the shots we did for the book.

The range of recipes is very eclectic, which made this cookbook really fun to shoot.

The Messy Baker

Charmian Christie's 'The Messy Baker' has hit the shelves and we're thrilled with the final result. In shooting this book, our goal was to show baking as it happens in the real world - sweet, savoury, messy and fun. Keeping things loose & playful, chapters are broken up into crumbly, dippable, sloppy, smudgy, gritty and drippy. The book is beautifully designed by Amy King and the Rodale design team.

Chef Michael Smith

Prime-Rib.jpg

We were thrilled to be invited out to Prince Edward Island this past January to shoot Chef Michael Smith's latest cookbook. Not so thrilled about the blizzard we got caught in on our way there (see the photo below).

Once we got settled in, it was a fantastic shooting experience in the beautiful town of Bay Fortune. Michael and his wonderful team set us up in an amazing cottage right next to the studio. I really can't say enough about how great we were treated while we were out there. It felt like we were on vacation.

A few highlights for me included:

1. Drinking PEI Moonshine. 2. The endless games of ping pong. 3. Madeleine discovering a new constellation - 'the mini dipper' 4. Noah taking on the nickname of 'lettuce leaf' 5. Watching Mel go up and down the stairs from the kitchen to the shooting area 900 times.

The book won't be out until later this year, but here's a little preview of some of the shots we did:
